چکیده
Abdominal cocoon or sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction described mostly in young adolescent girls. Thick fibrotic peritoneum encasing the small bowel is a pathognomonic feature. Preoperative diagnosis is rare. A 37-year-old man with hypertension and chronic renal failure presented with complaints of vomiting and abdominal pain lasting a few days. He had several similar episodes in the past with spontaneous symptomatic relief. He had a history of anorexia, weight loss, low-grade fever and gradual abdominal distension for a few months. Clinical examination revealed distended abdomen with ascites with tenderness and hyperperistaltic sounds. Laboratory studies revealed anemia, hypoalbuminemia, exudate type ascites (SAAG<1.1), significantly raised adenosine deaminase of ascitic fluid and positive PCR for tubercle bacilli. Plain radiograph of the abdomen in supine posture revealed dilated small bowel loops in the mid-abdominal region.

Abdominal Cocoon Secondary to Meconium Peritonitis in a Neonate: A Case Report
Abdominal cocoon is a complete or partial encasement of intestines and rarely viscera by a fibrocollagenous sac which is usually formed by a nonspecific chronic inflammatory reaction. We report a case of abdominal cocoon in a 2-day-old neonate presenting with intestinal obstruction.

The abdominal cocoon is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction that is usually diagnosed at the time of laparotomy. It is usually of unknown origin, although at times, it may be seen secondary to a variety of conditions. Tuberculosis is an infrequently implicated cause of abdominal cocoon, and has only occasionally been reported previously in the Literature. This paper presents our experience w...

BACKGROUND Amongst the numerous causes of intestinal obstruction listed in the literature, sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis also called Abdominal Cocoon (AC) is one of the rarest entities. Its characteristic feature is a thick fibrotic membrane encasing varying lengths of the small and large gut in a cocoon. In India, there is an increasing incidence of tuberculosis, especially in the rural...
متن کاملA rare case of abdominal cocoon.
AIM Abdominal cocoon is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction usually diagnosed incidentally at laparotomy. It manifests by forming a membrane that typically encases the small bowel loops, leading to mechanical obstruction. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult. The etiology of this condition is not well understood; however, it is a form of chronic irritation and inflammation. METHOD A 33 year...

Routine laboratory investigations revealed hemoglobin of 11 gm/dL, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of 80 ...
متن کاملCocoon-like fibroadhesive tuberculous peritonitis in a peritoneal dialysis patient.
Tuberculous peritonitis is a devastating complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Presentations of tuberculous peritonitis range from the common wet ascitic form to the rare fibroadhesive form, which is clinically indistinguishable from encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. We describe a 76-year-old man on continuous ambulatory PD for three months developing wet ascitic form of tuberculous per...
